In this post I want to lift the lid on all things Cookie related, specifically the new laws which come into force next week… according to Papertank, of course.
Cookies
A cookie, for those who don’t know, is a piece of data stored on your computer which a website can access. They have been about since the mid-90s and are used by the majority of websites for user tracking (analytics – to see how many people visit your website), e-commerce (shopping cart items) and, in some cases, advertising.
Privacy
Obviously privacy is a major concern for web users, and something that web developers have to take into consideration for each project. Recently, high-profile companies like Facebook, Twitter and Google have put effort into reassuring their users about how they handle data and what is stored. In the UK, government bodies like the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) give businesses advice and draft legislation regarding privacy, and websites have long adopted the ‘privacy ...

Continuing on from last weeks idea of posters, I created a couple more.
The first was inspired by long running fascination with the VW logo. It’s something I’ve always found really pleasing to look at. It’s also incredibly easy to replicate in Illustrator.
The second is founded up my complete lack of knowledge of printing standards, and frustration when it comes to trying to understand which pantone book I should be using.
Damned pantone…
In other news, I got some of last week’s “Pi” posters printed.
But I’m a bit skeptical of how they have come out.. so there may run a wee competition to win one instead of selling them.

To take a break from photographing my face (and hopefully quell this narcissistic attitude I seem to be developing), I have spent the last week creating some poster designs for the fun of it.
I actually got quite hooked on this exercise and ended up doing a lot of the work at night at home, further destroying my social life.
Maybe I should think of another “Something Creative For The Weekend” that involves other people, being outside and drinking…
When trying to make the designs a bit more visually interesting and some depth, I sort of stumbled into a technique I fell in love with. I think by the 4th design (pi), I had a style I was really happy with.
I’m considering getting a really small run of each printed. So if you are interesting in any, drop me a line.

In order to celebrate, we are having an office party which will be getting into full swing as soon as this blog post is finished. There is beer and the obligatory sweet thai chilli crisps and sour cream Pringles combo. There is even a box of wine. That’s right folks, a box. No expense has been spared.
To leave you with something creative for the weekend, here are a selection of shots taken at Papertank HQ this week.

Download The .PSD file here
While I was browsing through all the styles and swatches that come with every version of Photoshop, I stumbled across what is possibly the some of the most out-dated and horrifying examples of “Button Styles” I have ever seen. See the horrifying example below.
So, I set out to create a very simple set of 10 buttons of minor varying themes.
Please download them and spread them around… no one should be subjected to the horrors of the default options.
Now even some of mine are somewhat “over the top”, but I trust you will use them responsibly. A button should be used to emphasise an element, not to make every link or piece of white space a gaudy monstrosity.

This is an actual style provided by Photoshop CS5. Who in their right mind uses that style?

This weeks piece is sponsored by boredom and loneliness in the office, while David is away on Holiday.
I had no one to judge me while I made an ass of myself. But now I have the whole internet community to do that.

After almost 2 years on the old Pentagon Building in town, we have finally packed up and moved… slightly closer into town.
It’s taken a few weeks, and more than a few tears, but we’re slowly getting settled in.
The building is made up entirely of “creative” businesses and artists. So it’s a great space to be in and hopefully one that will push us to produce the same level of quality that the others are.
So if you fancy stopping in and checking out our (quite obviously) Ikea’d office, the new address and phone numbers are below!

I can’t quite believe it’s been a whole year since we started Papertank, but today marks our first official Birthday!
Just looking through my projects folder, which is, admittedly, a bit of a mess, I can count over 20 projects this past year ranging from cms websites and flash adverts to e-commerce sites and bespoke web applications.
Chris and I would like to say a huge thank you to all our new and existing clients for supporting us this year, and we look forward to working with you again in 2011/12.
From starting out last June as a Limited Partnership, we’ve gone from strength to strength with many of our clients recommending us for our personal, individual approach to all our projects. We’re now a Limited Company and are looking forward to taking the next step and focusing our efforts even more on becoming a leading digital company in Scotland.
Happy Birthday to us!
Chris & David.

With the current onslaught of Zombie realted TV shows, films comics and video games, some people have been saying that it’s hard to find the good ones to focus on.
But these people are wrong.
There is no such thing as a bad Zombie-related anything. Even when the creators are aiming for something meaningful but all that comes out is a cheap gore fest, with scantily clad women and $1 special effects, the end result is something that is great to watch and even better to laugh about.
For all of you out there oblivious to the world of Zombies, check these out to get you started.
Films
Dawn of the Dead (there’s 2, check them both out!)
Army of Darkness
Zombieland
Shaun of the Dead
Night of the Living Dead (The Classic and some may say, beginning of modern Zombie flicks)
28 Days Later
TV
Walking Dead
(if anyone has more suggestions, feel free to chip in)
Comics
Walking Dead (it came first, the TV show followed)
And lastly, for anyone kicking about in the UK at the moment… They have Zombie Strippers in Fopp for a meagre £1.

Customers are usually confused as they have to fish around on the page to see the ‘Don’t have a PayPal account? Use your credit card or bank account (where available)’ link.
The alternative to the standard edition is Website Payments Pro, whereby users aren’t required to have a PayPal account and card details can be taken on your website. Magento integrates straight up with this version of PayPal, and after you plug in your login details and API key, you’ll find a new debit / credit card form on the order checkout.
